GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS & MECHANISMS OF ACTION

Smaltoplast ThermoShield is an elastomeric 100% acrylic thermoceramic acrylic coating for exterior walls. It is a resistant protective coating membrane for all exterior surfaces such as masonry, concrete, new or old plaster. The special composition of the coating provides for a range of energetic applications in the field of summer as well as winter energy savings.

The energy efficiency of the thermoceramic membrane is based on a complex combination of acting phenomema like reflection, solar benefit, dehumidification, scattering, thermal transfer (by emission, convection, conduction) on the surface of the thermoceramic membrane as also inside the membrane. Dehumiditication process (is the instant drying of the wall and is done by two ways: capillary transport and diffusion) has a very strong influence to obtain a “dynamic” minimum of humidity in the coating which helps in energy saving! To obtain an energy efficient membrane one should apply 300ml/m2 (in two coatings) or 300μm dry film thickness.

The thermoceramic coating reflects over 90% of the striking solar radiation in Visible area. Studies concerning reflection in IR (Infra Red) area and other IR transfer phenomena are running now. Special pigments which reflect in IR area are under evaluation for further boosting of energy efficiency of membrane. Furthermore the thermoceramic membrane protects the coating from fungi and algae.

From our best experience  and in order to evaluate “static” thermal insulation properties of a wall protected with SMALTOPLAST ThermoShield, one could use an effective thermal conductivity coefficient λeff=0,00021-0,00067 W/mK (effective value, which consider all active mechanisms).

The measured[1] value of thermal conductivity coefficient is λcond=0,0045-0,04 W/mK (has been evaluated considering only conduction thermal tranfer mechanism).
