VECHRO: A Greek paint industry with a history of almost 70 years
Vechro has based its success in the principle that the quality and the environmental consciousness are strictly interconnected. In 2003, the company certified its first EU ecolabel product and since then, with 96 certified products, is the No1 company in total sales and certifications of ecological paints in Greece. Moving in 2020, Vechro became an EU ecolabel ambassador. EU Ecolabel acquires high standards and severely criteria which guard and protect the quality of human life. Based on these specifications, Vechro has adjust its actions and incorporate sustainability as the basic value and code of the company’s culture.
Vechro's factory facilities (of 9000 sqm) are located in Petra Viotias, in a privately-owned land of 6.4 acres, while the company's central offices are located in Athens 302 Liosion Ave., Attica. VECHRO has a steady rising course, expanding every year its share in the Greek market (being the 3rd largest paint and varnish industry in Greece). Nowadays, the company is well known, by the Greek consumers, as the industry with both high-quality products and flawless technical support.
Gold Award for Vechro
Vechro’s product Smaltoplast Silk was awarded with the Gold award in the category of “Innovative Consumer Product” at the “Made in Greece 2019” awards which took place at the Athens Concert Hall on December 16, 2019. An extremely honorable distinction for the company and its innovative products.
Vechro was awarded at the Ermis Awards
An Ermis Bronze Award was given to Vechro for its new logo in the “Rebranding” category. One of the most significant distinction for the company took place on March 19, 2019. Ermis Awards are the institution for rewarding creativity and they are the major event in the major of Advertising and Communication in Greece
A year of change for Vechro
Vechro’s new logo is a flower-brush, a symbol of creativity and change for interior and exterior surfaces. The company wanted to indicate a different perspective and a new way of thinking, by motioning a new era. Vechro’s focal point is to pinpoint an ecological and a more responsible point of view both for its partners and its consumers. The choice of the new logo has caused as a conclusion from the “green” culture that the company adopt in early 00s.
Vechro, as one of the tops brand for 2016!
Vechro emerged among the top corporate names in Greece for 2016 in the category “Building Materials”. This particular elevation was a part of “Superbrands” which takes place every year in 91 countries around the world.
Smaltox Water Stop as “DIY product of the year for 2016”
Smaltox Water Stop was voted by Greek consumers as the DIY product of the year for 2016 in the “Building Materials” category, at the 9th DIY & Home improvement Conference held on December 1st at the Maroussi Plaza Center. An important and special distinction for the company as it was decided from the Greek consumers.

Having a significant competitive advantage, Vechro made a strategic partnership with the largest manufacturer in the Greek DIY market called “Praktiker Hellas”. Thus, consumers are able to find the company’s products throughout the Praktiker stores. Also, as part of this strategy, Vechro undertakes the production of Praktiker own brand products.
In 2010, Vechro, this time first in Europe certifies the properties of ecological paints for exterior surfaces with Smaltoplast 100% Acrylic. The ecological mentality of the company was highlighted once again with its participation in the 6th Ecolife Exhibition.
Vechro had created a successful advertising campaign within the public transportation in Athens in order to increase its brand awareness. With this campaign Vechro invited consumers to a “dream trip” of ecological colors. At the same time, three of Vechro’s innovative products were certified. Those products are Smaltox Hydro Eco, Smaltoplast Universal Primer, and Smaltoxyl Hydro Eco. To conclude, in a sense of social responsibility and solidarity Vechro became a sponsor of the Hellenic Children’s Museum, the foundation for welfare and education of the deaf and hard of hearing in Greece, the 1st high school of Heraklion, Attica, and last but not least the 11th elementary school of Kallithea.
After 60 years of creative and innovative operation with 46 total certifications of ecological paints, the company continues to pioneer. First in Europe, Vechro certifies its innovative product called Smaltoplast Silk which is ecological, odorless, high quality plastic paint based on nanotechnology. Smaltoplast silk is a certified antimicrobial with action on resistant microbes that cause serious nosocomial infections. Smaltoplast silk has strong certifications and reputable test controls from the European Union and the British Allergy Foundation (Allergy UK), and the paint research association of UK. At the same time, the company is an active member of the community as it became responsible for “coloring” public schools and also making donations in a Greek non-profit organization called “Hamogelo toy paidioy” or else “The smile of the child”.
The company launches its new updated website and publishes the first issue of Vechro’s newspaper called “Vechro news”. Hence, Vechro conducts successful seminars in various Greek cities such as Larissa, Volos, Agrinio, Nafplio, Ioannina, Serres etc. The company invests in its strong ecological mentality through the production of excellence quality plastic paint called “Smaltoplast Extra Eco”. At the same time, Vechro decides to renew and donate its products at the decoration of the new “Hamogelo toy paidioy” house in Melissia, Attica.
European Union has already certified 15 products from Vechro’s brand portfolio among them the well-known Smaltoplast Extra and Smaltolux Hydro.
A new millennium with new goals for the company. The management break grounds with its innovative approach to decide the orientation of its product portfolio in ecological products, taking into consideration the need to protect the environment and human values. Nowadays, the motto of the company “Think Ecologically- Color Ecologically” along with the statement “No1 company in total sales and total certifications of ecological products from 2003 until now” portray the communication strategy of the company.
It took few more than 10years for the company to complete the investment plan of the factory which led to double the production capacity, to reduce the operating costs, a total automating production, and last but not least the improvement of the land use planning.
The second generation of the Chatzinickola family is actively involved in the company boosting-along with its experienced personnel-the dynamic development of the company.
Ioannis P. Chatzinikolas, Sales Manager of the French company back then, buys its share and the company becomes- and has remained since then- purely Greek.
The factory plant is moved to Petra in Viotia (25km Thivon-Livadias).
Less than 20years were needed for the remarkable development of the company to draws the attention of foreign investors and, as a result, Vechro is bought off by the French company Societe Francaise Duco.
